10 years of the Kosciuszko Institute
From the European Integration Institute to the Kościuszko Institute
The institute was founded in 2000 on the initiative of groups of individuals connected with the Jagiellonian University and the Warsaw School of Economics. Think tank started its activities under a name of the European Integration Institute. It undertook actions aiming at developing concepts of Polish policy towards the EU that would best serve the Polish national interest in the pre-accession period and contribute to Polish preparations for the EU membership.
As a result of un unprecedent enlargement, first in 2004, and then in 2007, the EU expanded to include 12 new countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as faced new challenges (institutional, economic, international and social). It soon became obvious that the legislation and the EU institutions do not provide Poland with solutions to all its problems. Aiming at new challenges, the Institute changed its name from the European Integration Institute to the Kościuszko Institute and expanded its research and program activities supporting Polish effectiveness and activity in the EU.
For more than 10 years, the Kościuszko Institute has strengthened its position among the best Polish expert centres. Our works were and are not only the basis for significant legislative reforms, but also content-related support for current activities of strategic decision-makers. Our greatest successes are projects of significant legislative reforms, inter alia, “Kluska Packet” that is the reform of institutions conducting Polish policy towards the EU; expert assessments for state institutions “Polish Presidency of the EU Council in 2011”, “Joining the eurozone: for or against”, opinion-forming projects “Ranking of Polish Members of the European Parliament 2009”, and social projects “Małopolska without corruption”, “Active student.”
The most precious for us are our experts from leading academic centres (the Jagiellonian University, the Warsaw School of Economics, the Cracow University of Economics, the University of Fribourg and the Polish Academy of Sciences), cooperation with Polish and the EU institutions that is, inter alia, the European Council, the chancellery of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, the Ministry of Foreign Affair of the Republic of Poland, the National Bank of Poland, the Polish Financial Supervision Authority, the Supreme Chamber of Control) as well as cooperation with Polish and international partners that is, inter alia, the World Bank, Scandinavian-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Forum in Krynica-Zdrój.
