Patron
Tadeusz Andrzej Bonawentura Kościuszko (1746-1817)
A great military leader and strategist, an engineer, a thinker, a patriot and a national hero in Poland and the USA. He was a graduate of the Piarist Collegium and the Corps of Cadets. In addition to that, he studied in art and engineering schools in Paris. He fought in the American Revolutionary War and the Polish-Russian War of 1792 (in defense of the Constitution of May 3, 1791) and organized the uprising which takes his name. He not only understood the ideals of republicanism and the principles of social solidarity, but also thought of the national good. He made a great effort to unite Poles in fighting for freedom. He endeavored to abolish peasant service to the state and to cut back vastly on serfdom. In exile, he remained a socially and politically active person, founding the Society of Polish Republicans. Although his opinions and ideas were not always accepted by the majority classes who were opinion makers in émigré circles, he was faithful to his ideals and to his motherland until his death. He always made every effort to fulfil the ideals of liberty, equality and the national good.
Why Kościuszko?
By choosing Tadeusz Kościuszko as the patron of our Institute we intended to emphasize the values that he represents, values which, despite the lapse of time, we intend to follow as we fulfil our mission and goals. Just like our patron, we want to develop new ideals and ideas for our society, especially Poland, through constant improvement, a broadening of our knowledge and everyday work. We aim to express our thoughts in the public sphere as well as promote our solutions and convince others to them. We want to indicate where the opportunities to develop are, not only within Poland but also around Europe.
